notes:
In 2009, Lance Armstrong participated in the Tour de France, returning to professional road racing cycling after having announced his retirement four years earlier in 2005. The opening time trial was one of the most high-profile moments in Lance's historic comeback, and for that time trial stage, he used the Trek Speed Concept bicycle customized by Marc Newson that is shown here. With a flat black clear coat over raw OCLV Carbon, offset by glossy contrast details, including Newson's "Stroboscopic" rear wheel design that appears to pulse as it spins, the bike brought a new level of design sophistication to the most legendary cycling event in the world, while simultaneously flying the flag of cancer awareness with the yellow of Armstrong's cancer awareness organization Livestrong. Lance Armstrong , who has won the Tour de France a record 7 consecutive times, was diagnosed with cancer in 1996. He underwent aggressive treatment to beat the disease, returned to professional cycling, and won the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005. In 1997, he established the Lance Armstrong Foundation to help others through the difficult process of treating cancer. Through his Foundation and the associated website and organization www.livestrong.org, over $400 million dollars has been raised to fight cancer. A donation of 16.5% from every sale of the Trek Team Issue Speed Concept 9.9 SSL will go to Livestrong. Born in 1963 in Sydney, Australia, Marc Newson studied at the Sydney College of the Arts. With a Studio now established in London, Newson is generally recognized today as one of the most accomplished, dexterous, and influential designers of his generation. Working across a wide range of disciplines, and designing both in the industrial sector as well as creating one-off and limited edition Studio pieces shown in major galleries and auction houses around the world, Newson's imaginative, and highly sought after products â€" ranging from concept jets and cars to cell phones, watches, table accoutrements, footwear, luggage, aircraft interiors, as well as sensational limited-edition furniture pieces â€" have all contributed to the present blurring of distinctions between art and design. Clearly inspired by a very personal, on-going exploration of mathematics, nature, technology, and science, Newson continuously transposes materials and techniques from one context to another to create complex, often baffling forms of startling beauty. Working between such extremes as rapid prototyping and hand-carved marble, his work embodies strong sculptural qualities which seem to have as much to do with what is not there as what is there, always exploring voids and interior spaces and creating illusions and new relationships. Newson's work is represented in the permanent collections of most of the world's major museums, and has been exhibited extensively in such museums as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, and the Vitra Design Museum, Berlin.
