Moss Holiday: Part One

Moss Holiday features LEGO Carlton

In tribute to the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Italian design revolt, Memphis (winter 1980-81), Moss commissioned renowned LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya to re-envision Ettore Sottsass’s iconic Carlton room divider for our 2010 Holiday window. The results are at once reverentially irreverent, and joyous and celebratory, and hopefully set the tone for our entire Holiday offering. We have worked hard to contribute what we could through another difficult year, and are looking forward to better — make that ‘good’ ! — times ahead. We are optimistic. Just as the Carlton has been reborn for our window, Moss re-imagines and then rebuilds itself over and over again, and changes as we must to meet new challenges and new opportunities. This is the first of a series of email messages, with news of Holiday wonders available now and in the days to come.

Man Made shelving unit (high) Peter Marigold

MOSS MOSS: THE DAILY NEW
  Nov 3, 2010

Man Made
shelving unit (high)
Peter Marigold

designer:
Peter Marigold
design year:
2009

notes:
The work shown here was made in December 2009 â€" January 2010, while London-based artist Peter Marigold was attending a Winter Artist Residency at NKD (Nordic Artists' Centre Dalsåsen) in Dale, Norway; additional pieces were created later especially for the exhibition 'Make Me' at Moss. Each piece of furniture is made from a single log by cutting successively smaller L-profiles, thus maintaining structure while retaining as much raw material as possible. The final dimensions and form of each piece of furniture are therefore determined by the size and shape of the original log. There is no waste. By definition, each piece of Man Made is therefore a unique example. Although created while Marigold was surrounded by a very simple, natural landscape, he endeavoured to produce forms that spoke of the human processing of natural materials to man's advantage â€" resulting in a hybrid of industrial and rural aesthetics. Hence the collection name, 'Man Made', juxtaposed with the almost synthetic red finish. Marigold writes of the color he chose to finish the surface of 'Man Made': "One day while in Norway I was walking through the forests and I came across a dead bird â€" it was possibly killed by another animal as there was red blood spilled over the snow. After a month of seeing the same colors - mostly white, black and green - to see this splash of color was quite surprising. It reminded of the etymological connection between the Russian words for beautiful and red: красивый красный and I thought that the reason for this must come from the same experience of seeing red after a long period of Winter. Red = beautiful."

materials:
painted Norwegian pine

dimensions:
19.5" x 13.75", height: 63"

price:
$4,500

Catalysis for Life: New Language of Dutch Art & Design

Catalysis for Life: New Language of Dutch Art & Design

works by Maarten Baas, Martijn Engelbregt, Ted Noten, Tomoko Take

October 29, 2010 - January 30, 2011

Design Superhero Maarten Baas, a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, has been represented by Moss since the exhibition of his seminal "Where There's Smoke..." series in 2004. Since then, he has continued to develop his unique visual language through the creation of works which are now held in important public and private collections around the world. Known for producing work which combines the symbolic nature of the artist's-hand with resonant themes such as authorship, identity, historicism, time, death and rebirth, Baas all the while works through a morphology that is completely his own.

Baas was named Designer of the Year at Design Miami in 2009, was deemed a Design Superhero at Moscow Design Week 2010 and his work is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Groninger Museum and the Stedlijk Museum in the Netherlands, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Catalysis for Life explores those attributes which define certain design and art as Dutch, and Maarten Baas stands as one of the purest exemplars of that "brand".
