notes:
British artist Richard Woods shifts across the boundaries of art, architecture and graphic design. His practice ranges from huge, block-printed wall coverings to smaller sculptures and paintings, but he is probably best known for his floor works, which are installed in galleries and shops around the world as well as the homes of collectors, artists and designers. These doors are a logical extension of this more established category. Each piece is hand-printed by the artist and is a unique work.

"Riedizioni" Large Square Bag multicolor fringe in polyurethane

MOSS MOSS: THE DAILY NEW
  Jul 15, 2011

"Riedizioni"
Large Square Bag
multicolor fringe in polyurethane

manufacturer:
Luisa Cevese, Italy

designer:
Luisa Cevese
design year:
2009

notes:
Riedizioni is the name for a series of personal and products for the house made from industrial waste materials. Another word for this is recycling. Damaged fabrics made of precious yarns, stained tablecloths, old lace, and prayer rugs with worshipped-in holes are among the objects that end up in Luisa Cevese's hands. The Milan-based designer is known for fixing fabric remnants in resin for her Riedizioni line of bags and shades. Cevese's work is the ultimate act of recyling: she not only reclaims that which would otherwise be thrown away, she creates new forms and new uses, and often finds that what she has made is art. Her mantra is a simple one: "I love waste".

materials:
silk; polyurethane

dimensions:
15" wide 15" high 7" deep

price:
$600

Trek Team Issue Speed Concept 9.9 SSL Customized by Marc Newson

Trek Team Issue Speed Concept 9.9 SSL
Customized by Marc Newson

manufacturer:
Trek, USA

designer:
Marc Newson
design year:
2009

notes:
In 2009, Lance Armstrong participated in the Tour de France, returning to professional road racing cycling after having announced his retirement four years earlier in 2005. The opening time trial was one of the most high-profile moments in Lance's historic comeback, and for that time trial stage, he used the Trek Speed Concept bicycle customized by Marc Newson that is shown here. With a flat black clear coat over raw OCLV Carbon, offset by glossy contrast details, including Newson's "Stroboscopic" rear wheel design that appears to pulse as it spins, the bike brought a new level of design sophistication to the most legendary cycling event in the world, while simultaneously flying the flag of cancer awareness with the yellow of Armstrong's cancer awareness organization Livestrong. Lance Armstrong , who has won the Tour de France a record 7 consecutive times, was diagnosed with cancer in 1996. He underwent aggressive treatment to beat the disease, returned to professional cycling, and won the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005. In 1997, he established the Lance Armstrong Foundation to help others through the difficult process of treating cancer. Through his Foundation and the associated website and organization www.livestrong.org, over $400 million dollars has been raised to fight cancer. A donation of 16.5% from every sale of the Trek Team Issue Speed Concept 9.9 SSL will go to Livestrong. Born in 1963 in Sydney, Australia, Marc Newson studied at the Sydney College of the Arts. With a Studio now established in London, Newson is generally recognized today as one of the most accomplished, dexterous, and influential designers of his generation. Working across a wide range of disciplines, and designing both in the industrial sector as well as creating one-off and limited edition Studio pieces shown in major galleries and auction houses around the world, Newson's imaginative, and highly sought after products â€" ranging from concept jets and cars to cell phones, watches, table accoutrements, footwear, luggage, aircraft interiors, as well as sensational limited-edition furniture pieces â€" have all contributed to the present blurring of distinctions between art and design. Clearly inspired by a very personal, on-going exploration of mathematics, nature, technology, and science, Newson continuously transposes materials and techniques from one context to another to create complex, often baffling forms of startling beauty. Working between such extremes as rapid prototyping and hand-carved marble, his work embodies strong sculptural qualities which seem to have as much to do with what is not there as what is there, always exploring voids and interior spaces and creating illusions and new relationships. Newson's work is represented in the permanent collections of most of the world's major museums, and has been exhibited extensively in such museums as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, and the Vitra Design Museum, Berlin.

Fossili Modern Meteore floor light limited edition

MOSS MOSS: THE DAILY NEW
  Jul 12, 2011

Fossili Modern
Meteore floor light
limited edition

manufacturer:
MASSImiliano Adami, Italy

designer:
Massimiliano Adami
design year:
2010

notes:
Massimiliano Adami's "Fossili Moderni" (Modern Fossils) are created with found objects, hand-selected by the artist. Every piece is unique. The Floor Meteore has a body of polyuretane foam and different kinds of recycled plastic objects, some of which contain a source of light. Others extend to the floor and become supports for the lamp. Cross-sectioning creates a plane across the object and allows light to emerge from the objects with a sources of light. The behavior of the lights can be controlled. They can all come on at the same time, or one by one. There's also a flashing light which is activated when the natural light decreases. When all the lights are off and the lamp is in the darkness, the foam body remains luminescent for a few seconds.

materials:
polyurethane foam and found objects

warning:
Do not expose the "Fossili Moderni" to direct sunlight (UV), water, or solvents.

price:
$13,800
